José Rodeiro Three Pears, oil-on-canvas, 24” x 19,” 2007.
Three pears rest surrounded by mangoes, rum bottles, yellow-pansies, and odd glass-bottles stuffed with toy-size copies of huge Pre-Columbian (800 CE) basalt statues from the Island of Zapatera, Lake Nicaragua. In 1995, Rodeiro saw these sculptures at the San Francisco Convent Cultural Center Museum, Granada, Nicaragua, while staying next door at the Casa de Tres Mundos -- where he was teaching art courses. |
