BODEGONES>
The artistic-classification BODEGON is a Spanish art historical term for still-life painting. Throughout Spain and Latin America in the 17th and 18th Centuries, the painting of Bodegones represented a significant Baroque art-form, which attracted important practitioners, i.e., Zurbaran, Sánchez-Cotán, and other Iberian and Latin American masters. José Rodeiro always incorporates iconological symbols and furtive stories into each still-life element, as well as allusions to artists like Cezanne, Matisse, and Morandi. Nevertheless, in their intimate and direct formal-compositions, the images are always stylistically unique. In this light, Rodeiro greatly values the work of other contemporary still-life innovators, e.g., Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, Nikolai Buglaj, and Ramiro Arango.
